What is Internal Medicine?
Internists, or internal medicine physicians, are specialists who diagnose, evaluate, and treat patients with medical conditions that that commonly occur from late adolescence through the geriatric years. Training in internal medicine is largely dedicated to learning about the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of both acute medical illness, as well as recurrent and chronic medical problems. Doctors in internal medicine must have completed a four year bachelor’s degree from an undergraduate institution, four years of education at an accredited medical school, and three to seven years of professional training in a residency program. Finally, internists must obtain a license to practice and may choose to obtain board certification in internal medicine.
